After graduating with a BS in biological aspects of conservation from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Alicia Leinburger served three years in Peace Corps El Salvador. Working with small coffee farmers in subsistence agricultural, she began to understand the limitations of markets in rural areas. Upon returning to Madison, she started working with the Equal Exchange Coffee Company, educating and organizing the community to increase the demand for Fair Trade coffee. After a successful year working on coffee, she began work with the Family Farm Defenders to market a fairly traded cheese, using the same sort of pricing model to keep more of the profit on the farms. Both in her professional and community life, Ms. Leinburger has worked for more than four years on building alternative business structures and community action for Fair Trade products.
