Richard Ross earned his DVM at Iowa State University in 1959 and his PhD in veterinary bacteriology thereafter. He has remained at Iowa State throughout much of his career, gaining widespread recognition for accomplishments in veterinary research and educational leadership. For 25-plus years, Dr. Ross dedicated his skills and energy to swine infectious disease research, establishing the premier research laboratory for the study of swine mycoplasma.

Dr. Ross was the associate dean for research for the College of Veterinary Medicine for two years, served as interim dean beginning in 1992, and was appointed to the dean's position in 1993. In February of 2000 Dr. Ross was named the interim dean for Iowa State's College of Agriculture. He assumed the duties full time in July of 2000 and relinquished his duties with the College of Veterinary Medicine in September 2000.

Dr. Ross has received numerous awards for outstanding achievements from both the research community and the livestock industry. In 1996 the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture recognized him with an award for Personal and Professional Excellence.
