John Beghin is professor of economics at Iowa State University,
where he joined the faculty in 1998. He is head of the Trade and
Agricultural Policy Division at the Center for Agricultural and
Rural Development (CARD) and director of the Food and Agricultural
Policy Research Institute (FAPRI), a CARD affiliate.
Dr. Beghin has positioned FAPRI as a central source of information
for World Trade Organization negotiations and debate on U.S. farm
policy. Recently, FAPRI conducted research on the impact of alternative
farm bill proposals, worked to expand understanding of the implications
of Chinese trade liberalization, and studied the effects of a reduction
in commodity acreage in the United States. Dr. Beghin's own research
looks at the linkages between the environment and international
trade.
A native of Belgium, Dr. Beghin studied economics at both Université
de l'Etat de Mons and Université Libre de Bruxelles. He has
an M.S. degree in agricultural economics form North Carolina State
University and a Ph.D. in agricultural and resource economics from
the University of California-Berkeley. He spent 10 years on the
faculty of North Carolina State University before coming to Iowa
State.
