Tassos Haniotis became a member of the cabinet of Dr. Franz Fischler,
commissioner of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries of
the European Commission, in August 2000. His main areas of responsibility
are the common market organizations of the Common Agricultural Policy
and the agricultural budget. He previously served four years as
the agricultural counselor of the European Commission Delegation
in the United States. Dr. Haniotis joined the Commission in 1989
and from 1990 until his arrival in the United States was responsible
for developing medium-term forecasts and quantitative analyses for
European Union agriculture.
He holds M.S. (1984) and Ph.D. (1987) degrees in agricultural economics
from the University of Georgia, and a B.A. (1980) in economics from
the Athens School of Economics and Business Science in his native
Greece. He also spent six months as a visiting fellow at the Centre
for European Agricultural Studies, Wye College, University of London
(1988), where he studied European Union-United States agricultural
trade relations in the Uruguay Round of GATT negotiations.
