Daniel A. Sumner is the director of the University of California
Agricultural Issues Center and the Frank H. Buck, Jr., Professor,
Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of
California-Davis. He teaches and conducts research and outreach
programs in the area of agricultural economics, policy, and international
issues.
Before returning to academics in 1993, Dr. Sumner spent several
years in government service, including a year as assistant secretary
for economics at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he supervised
the economic and statistical work of the Department and provided
policy advice to the secretary regarding the NAFTA and GATT negotiations
and the 1990 farm bill, among other issues.
Dr. Sumner's research and writing has won American Agricultural
Economic Association awards for Quality of Research Discovery, Quality
of Communication, and Distinguished Policy Contribution. In recognition
of his career contributions, Sumner was named a Fellow of the Association
in 1999.
Sumner was raised on a fruit farm in Solano County, California.
He received a B.S. in agricultural management at Cal Poly, San Luis
Obispo, an M.S. from Michigan State, and a Ph.D. in economics from
the University of Chicago.
