Robert Thompson is responsible for providing technical and strategic
leadership to The World Bank's rural development efforts, including
human resource development, knowledge management, sector strategy
and policy, and quality assurance. He joined the World Bank in June
1998 as an advisor on rural development strategy and policy, working
extensively on the financially stressed countries of East Asia and
preparation for the international agricultural trade negotiations
under the World Trade Organization.
Prior to moving to The World Bank, Mr. Thompson served as president
and CEO of Winrock International Institute for Agricultural Development,
dean of agriculture at Purdue University where he was also a professor
of agricultural economics, assistant secretary for economics at
the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and senior staff economist for
food and agriculture on the President's Council of Economic Advisers.
Active in all facets of agriculture, Dr. Thompson is the past president
of the International Association of Agricultural Economists and
is a member of the North American Agribusiness Advisory Board of
Rabobank. He is a former board member of the National Cooperative
Bank; PSI Resources, and its wholly owned subsidiary, PSI Energy;
the Vigoro Corporation; Terra Industries, Inc.; and the International
Agribusiness Management Association. He also serves on the International
Policy Council on Agriculture, Food and Trade and the Council on
Foreign Relations.
Dr. Thompson is a bachelor of science graduate of Cornell University
and received its outstanding alumni award in 1988. He earned both
his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University. He was raised
on a dairy farm near Ogdensburg, New York.
